I don't know what prompted me to write this post; the basic ideas have been in the back of my head for a while now, but I guess the whole thing with the Vice Presidential debates (which I can't watch right now, as my laptop is being screwy and my television seems to be refusing to accept any signals) may have been the cause.
I have a huge problem with Republicans. I am not a Democrat, nor do I profess to be one, but even so I can see how phony their entire system is. Republicans seem to only want to win elections and gain power, without any regards as to the actual ability of those they endorse. Republican candidates cannot have any opinions unpopular with the Republican base; if they once had an opinion that did not coincide with other Republican policies, they would have to change those opinions (see John McCain).
Another problem I have with Republicans is that they seem so sure, at all times, that anything they believe is right, and that thus any reasoned argument with their beliefs is.. unreasonable. They seem to believe that they alone have the Truth, and that no one else does. Whether this is a by-product of the fact that much of "God's Own Party" belongs to the Evangelical Christian faith is uncertain.
Let me make one thing clear- I consider myself a Christian. In fact, to go even further, I consider myself an EVANGELICAL Christian. That's right. I'm one of them. However, a disturbing trend I've found in many churches is their opinion that simply "believing" is enough to be saved, and that such a thing cannot be debated because it is the Truth. Of course, Protestantism was created as a religion that stressed salvation by faith, not through good works, but the problem is that many Christians don't know what believing is.
Simply being able to say that you believe in one thing or another cannot possibly be enough. If you truly believe, in ANY god, the teachings of your religion should be reflected in your own life. There's no point in stressing that faith alone will save you, because through faith, good works should be a part of your life. Of course, to agnostics and atheists, it could be said that those good works are the only things good about Christianity. Unfortunately, with the Reformation, our little sect scrapped the good works and kept the faith. In other words, according to agnostics and atheists, there isn't really anything all that good about Christianity in its present form. And despite my own religious affiliation, I'd have to say I agree.
There is a word for this. It's a word that's used often by Republicans, only they use it to speak about members of the opposition. Strangely enough, it's quite evident that Republicans are the hypocrites. They cite patriotism and honor while getting into huge scandals and openly opposing things the troops would want. This may seem like a huge generalization, but this is a blog and I'm allowed to do that: Republicans don't give a shit about what's right and wrong. There is only the Truth, and anything else is a lie.
